Summary: Arc Architects has broad experience of working with earth materials in new buildings, in conservation and in research projects. Arc holds professional accreditation in Conservation and Sustainable Design.
In new buildings, earth materials form part of a holistic sustainable design approach. Projects have included earth bricks, light earth, clay plasters and cob. Arc’s expertise in the conservation of earth structures, especially cob and earth mortared structures, has won many awards, including a Europa Nostra. Arc is actively involved in research in both fields and currently is monitoring and evaluating the effects of climate change on cob buildings. Summary: Little and Davie have been building with earth for 15 years and have experience of cob, light earth, earth block and clay plasters, as well as lime and stone materials. Working in both new build and conservation, the firm is based in Scotland but has worked in England and Ireland as well. In 2009 Little & Davie won the Marsh National Craftsperson of the Year Award for their work on earth construction and they are recognised as national experts in Scotland. The firm has run many workshops and training events for all kinds of audiences, from pre-school children to conservation professionals.
